Do you need the ten commandments to be publicly displayed in case you forget a couple? I've never understood why some Christians feel the need for government validation of their beliefs.
Also, no one swears on a bible anymore.

Unfortunately, you do not anymore. I say "unfortunately because those Great men who established this Nation did so to found a Nation that was Free of Tyranny, free of Rule by Royal Decree or Papal Edict, free to be ruled by it's Wisest god fearing citizens, under a System of States Rights, That would in-turn, agree to submit to a coordinated Central Federal Government, empowered by the States to regulate, negotiate, and respond in a combined voice as the United States of America, on common issues which faced the Nation.
People seem to forget that many people came to the New World seeking religious freedom. Freedom to practice their own faith without being opressed, tortured, or hung as heretics because they did not embrace the one true religious organization of the British Isles - The Church of England.
So it follows that many of our founding fathers were deeply religious men - of different faiths, but each of whom recognizing the others right to worship in his own way without punishment or discrimination. And that ideal has been carried down since the inception of this Great Nation UNTIL JUST RECENTLY.
Look around Washington DC - at the prominent Federal Buildings & Monuments and you will find that ALL of them are decorated with scripture, and Biblical characters - this is to pay homage to God and ask him to Bless this Nation. It's not about Christianity -v- Muslin, or Buddist, or Hindu, or any other religion, (I think it validates and incorporates all religions and the notion anyone may have of a power greater than ones self at work in the universe).
What aggrivates me so damn much is that a few a$$holes engage the ACLU to have all connoation of God or reference to religion torn from the Public's eye, becuase it doe's not give equal time to the opposite side of the equation - the agnostics and the wicans, satanists, and whomever else finds these "Public Displays of Christianity Disturbing".
So the whining,mean-spirited bitterness,of a few jerks with too much time on their hands, and only hatred in their hearts and poisoned minds can over overturn Centuries of History, on a whim. I was am a former Marine, and I would like a little time with each of these mis-guided Citizens to give them and "Attitude-Adjustment".

Given that the Ten Commandments are the basis of the idea of LAW, it should be compulsory that they be displayed in every courthouse and legislature, to remind Law makers and Judges of where the Law came from originally. The reason they took them down? Most laws passed by legislatures these days would not meet the standards of Genesis.

I've been in court a few times, either as a defendant or witness, and I've never sworn on the Bible. They tell you to raise your right hand and "swear or affirm" that the testimony you give is the truth.

1. Because the court house represents a secular state which makes its laws based upon a secular government
2. Because the individual Christian or Jew believes this to be the book of God and in the old days peoples faith was stronger and it was expected that they would be less prone to lie if they swore upon it.
By the way Muslims are asked to swear upon the Qur'an and athesits with their hand on their chest or in the air.

No one is "made to swear" on a bible any more. All you have to do is take the oath to tell the truth.
