Yes, it's a cliche but freedom isn't free. My father, grandfather, great grandfathers going back to the revolutionary war have fought for this country. People don't like to think about it, but it's our military prowess that keeps a lot of countries from messing with us. I teach my children to support the troops regardless of their belief in the politics

Since I am retired now I guess I answer that. I joined during the Vietnam War just to avoid the draft and to complete my mandatory military obligation service. Yes, I was proud to serve and complete that service.
I didn't get selected to fight in Vietnam or Iraq, but I did serve and didn't complain about the job I had.
Younger generations had the luxury on not having to do a military obligated service, and could plan what they wanted to do after school. I believe I made the right decision.

I am proud of my service and have no regrets. Military life is not perfect, you do have your ups and downs. I know that I have made the right decision because I feel fulfilled by my job. I also enjoy the comraderie and the travel that comes with being in the service.

It was a waste of time. College would have been a better choice. I did 6 years but I could have done better in prison. Nothing good happened during my 6 years. A total waste of time.

Honestly, I really didn't join the military to "serve my country", I joined for the education and experience.
