Here's the way I look at it when something bad happens to me.
1) Either this (situation) has been caused by me, God or Satan.
2) It doesn't matter who brought up the situation.
3) How do I resolve the situation?
4) What’s a lesson I can learn (or have learned) from the situation?
Satan causes bad things to happen to us because we walked away from God or we are heading back to God (and he (Satan) wants to keep us from Him (God)). In this case keep your eyes on God, rebuke Satan and Worship Jesus.
If I caused bad things to happen it's because I haven't kept my eyes on God and I have strayed away from Him (many people find this when they get into financial trouble or relationship issues)
If God caused the situation then He is not punishing us but 'testing' us (meaning He is clearing out the impurities in our lives and 'refining' us like one would refine gold) This means that we will exit the situation better than when we entered it and will be stronger and more knowledgeable than before the situation.
God Bless you brother. May God guide you through all the troubles in your life.
Ps. May I offer the advice that you move to a place where your degree would be more useful (even in a different country).

Good point. We "punish" ourselves with our unwisdom. Everyone, believer and non-believer alike, has consequences from choices and actions. It's a law of the universe. It's up to us whether we examine our lives and move forward in knowledge and grace or ignore the results from our choices and actions and fall into self-centeredness and become consumed by our ego. It's inherent in the system of the source of all being. The purpose of prayer for the believer is to attune and harmonize herself to that perfect system, a subtle inner adjustment that requires purity of heart and motive.
I can't pretend to know why you can't get a job. There could be many reasons, but you are not being punished. You are however, being tested, as we all get tested by life when there is difficulty. The question is, are you going to be patient and grow and from this experience, or are you going to rant and rave yourself into an aneuryism?

Sometimes, when bad things are happening to the world and everything seems unfair... you have to remember. LIFE IS UNFAIR. Next, you don't think things from where you stand. Example, you want to know the reason why terrorists are getting everything their way. You don't think from terrorists going to the bad stuff they did going to the good stuff they did and hoping to end up with God's plan. You START with God's plan, then start going down. It's just that sometimes we really do not know God's plan, but we do know He has a plan.
The Bible talks about trials... we consider them as bad stuff... but what we should is be happy about them! TRIALS ARE GOOD! Does that mean when you are super burdened with work and stuff... that's a good thing? Well, it's not good because of what it does to you. Like, if you are under a sickness... that trial is not good because you are suffering and having to stay in bed and stuff. I don't think God gives you sickness to watch you rot. You should rejoice in those trials, because they give you PERSEVERANCE.
God bless :D.

God doesn't punish, he sets the law and we are self corrected. Society is the one to blame for suffering and karma for when bad things happen to you. I know that sounds contradicting but bad people are all about themselves and take from others forcefully even, where as good people try to be law abiding citizens seem to get the short end all the time.

I don't believe that God is punishing us right now.. if He were then we would have a Prophet telling us that we were...
I believe that God just withholds His blessings from us when we do not follow His commandments.. which may seem like punishment sometimes.
Edit: I agree with Jedi.. you should have studied something that was going to be in demand when you graduated.. either that or you should have studied to be near the top of your graduation class so there would be job offers waiting when you graduated.

God does not punish us, if he were to do so he would be surely a twisted entity as he makes us free but seeks to control our actions, as we know this cannot be tue as God is good.
God grants us freedoms and liberty to live life with free will. It is the decisions we make as mortals that allow us to live as we wish.
There are good ways and bad ways to live our lives, if we choose to live well as a collective we can experience heaven on earth, if we choose poorly our lives and those of others can be made hellish. Some believe that there is a best way to live your life and God ensures there is a path that always results in good ends and means, but he grants us the freedom to choose other paths. To deny people a choice in their live would be to make us puppets. He cannot do this and be a good God and by definition, as we know, God is good.
To live life in strife surely is punishment enough and that is the individuals choice that takes them there not God.

By good things happening to us all the time we should know this is pure harbinger of bad things to come.A swing becomes sweet when it is about to untie. If you want to prepare for peace prepare for war.Read about Job in the book of Job.He was tempted to the point of his wife asking him why he still believed in God after all tribulations.Job believed in God despite all his tribulations. In the end he was rewarded by God twofold. When children of God face bad things, they should be strong instead.Temptations are used to make children of God strong.God will be with you even during the time of trbulations. When you see tribulations know that the salvation of God is near.Tribuations should make us strong. For iron to be strong it has to be heated in order to be moulded.Children of God, when you see tribulations be strong and stand firm.Temptations should not make you weak, instead it should make you strong and firm.

Punishment is a part of life. Most people have to face punishment. But you should work hard or act smartly to get over these punishment. God has nothing to do with punishment. He exists in our minds. Every one religious or not has to face problems in life. He or she has to try their best to solve his problems. God cannot solve your problems since he does not exist .Only you can solve your problems by thinking rationally and working hard.

God is gentle and does not push us, He may convict us of our sin but He has given us a way out. The way is through His Son Jesus. bad people only seem to be winning but there is a day of judgement and we all have to give an account, good or bad
