because the tablets you have taken are designed for normal headaches [to make your blood vessels open up to relieve the restricted blood flow].
in a true migraine, your vessels are already expanded to their full capacity - thus - no effect from the normal headache tablets. You need to constrict the vessels - look for something with dihydrocodeine in - in UK usually something like DF118, but these can only be on prescription.

imigran contains sumatriptan 50 mg. Sumatriptan acts like serotonin, the brain chemical involved in migraine, helping to return blood vessels to normal and calming the sensory nerves. The result is that Imigran Recovery can stop all the main migraine symptoms in their tracks: headache pain, nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. this is a new migrane drug and is a P med in your local pharmacy meaning it can only be sold when the pharmacist is present however because it is new and does have sum restrictions of use ie if your epilieptic, its the first time you have had a migraine, If you are under 18 or over 65 , heart problems high blood pressure etc if you have not taken imigran before you will be required to fill out a questionaire to ensure it is safe and appropriate for you to use but once you have done it and it has been decided that it the right choice to suit you, you will get a card signed by the pharmacist so you will not have to retake it should you need to get it again in the future. you can download the questionaire and get more info from the imigran website http://www.imigranrecovery.co.uk/default.aspx
imigran should only be used to treat a migraine not to prevent it from happening. closing the curtains and laying in a cool dark room, using cooling pads or natural cooling balms such as mint oils can help. make sure you drink plenty of water i hope you feel better soon hope this helps x-x-x

Migraine is a pain!
If I feel the headache come on in the very early stages - I have to take a Nurofen. This helps prevent the blaster coming through. There are times they do get through. These headaches are bad and will only go away with the Nurofen - the only brand that helps me. I have tried most other brands but nothing compares to this one.
After so many headaches and migraines I went through the sequence of what I ate, how I slept, how I worked etc, etc. With all of these parameters in place could find out what was bothering me. Stress was the onsetter for me - it's not what everybody else gets.

This is a good question because I suffer from Migraines myself and know how they feel and the effects they have on our everyday life.
I myself take prescription medication for mine prescribed by my doctor and I have to take the medication the moment I feel it coming on which I can tell when it is about to start.
I also learned that certain food, allergies, the weather also triggers Migraines,as well there is no easy answer to this except this that you need to talk with your doctor because every ones Migraines, starts and effects them differently so the best advice I can give you is not to play doctor on your own or listen to friends who do not suffer from Migraines, because they have no idea as to what they are talking about and what your dealing with OK,seek medical advice on your particular Migraine OK and don't wait too long to do it putting it off is not going to help your problem it will only prolong the suffering because only a doctor can determine how severe your Migraine, and what kind and how strong of a medication you will need.Good Luck!

Are you even sure that it is a migraine? Research shows that over 90% of people who think they have migraines actually don't. They either are suffering from regular headaches, or have some other medical condition that they were not even aware of. The best thing you can do is go discuss this with your doctor. No one here is going to be able to give you a proper diagnosis. Good luck!

I used to have terrible migraines years ago which knocked me out for a couple of days after but a friend told me to go to acupuncture and after only a few treatments it was amazing, now I rarely get a headache let alone a migraine. I know it's something you have to pay for as you can't, yet, get it on the NHS but it is sooooooo worth doing.

Unfortunately, little does work on migraines short of narcotic painkillers. The only other thing I do for my yearly migraines is to lie down in a cold dark room and shoot the cat for walking across the floor - I'M KIDDING! (lol)

Have you tried imitrex?

Also look into how much water you drink and how much stress you are under. Stress and food allergies can trigger migraines - if meds aren't helping, prevention may need to be your focus.

i have only had them one period in my life and that was when i had a hormone imbalance aftere a pregnancy. try looking at your diet particularly things like caffeine, chocolate, cheese and wine. cut some things out of your diet for a while and see if it makes a difference. allergies are often to blame. My problem wasn't allergy related but there was nothing that worked for me i had to go to bed with a hot water bottle and sleep it off.
