Nearly all big corporations are now making a profit on you ringing, for example Vodaphone is 17p a minute. The local police are also an 0845 17p a minute job. May I suggest that you vociferously complain, refuse to ring rip of numbers, do not ring the hospital phone at 50p a minute, ring the ward, tell them you are overseas, this activity should be stopped, if you discover that you are dealing with this sort of agency then find out their real number, ring their emergency number, or change supplier. This is underhand theft.

Here in France all call prices have to be marked, not so the UK, did YOU know how much it costs to ring your friend in hospital, in France each bed has a phone and it is a normal call to ring it, did YOU know that you can now ring your local police by either 999 or at 17p a minute on 0845, in Europe you pay a normal call cost, no wonder people dial 999 for silly things.
If you want to ring about your Credit card use the lost and stolen line, they hate it but hey we hate being ripped off.

It's not just companies that do this.
More an more private individuals only give mobile phone numbers. Even if they have landlines, they don' t bother to pick it up, chances are it would be a sales call anyway.

So we end up having to pay through the nose to call mobile phones - far more expensive from a landline than calling an 0845 number.

I understand what your saying but we have a choice and we choose to use our phones so in effect, we are saying we are willing to pay that amount to make a call.

If you wanted to sell your car worth 4 grand but some guy offers you eight grand your going to take it and the phone companies are no different.
You are right, we all should cut down on our calls to try and drive the price down but i don't see it ever happening.
The way it will happen is through pressure to have a level playing through Europe, by inviting more european companies into the UK as phone providers increasing competition especially as they are much, much cheaper than what we pay here.

There may be some advantages to being part of Europe after all.

There is a UK web-site saynoto0870.com which you use to try to get alternative phone numbers. This site includes 0845 numbers as well. They have "normal" geographic numbers listed. They don't have every company / number but it is worth giving it a look.
