It used to mean a gang murder done by the wearer. Then also a loss of a family gang member due to a murder even if not done by that person. Now many people wear them to signify the loss of a loved one whether or not they were involved in gangs or prison.

Typically, yes. If it's gang affiliated. Some have done it b/c of losing a loved one. Also, gang affiliated. It can symbolize strength or sadness, depending on the circumstances.
