You can use the magnetic Lasso tool from the toolbox and highlight the area you want, then inverse the selection and delete it

You can also use the Magic wand tool and choose the area you want to delete and delete it.

I do this on a daily basis, and the method you use totally depends upon the outcome you desire. If you're just going for a shoody dropout to white, with rough edges, and non-exact corners and such, then the magnet lasso will work fine. If you want a quality, clean edge drop out, use the pen tool.
-Place points all around your subject(s), making sure the points are inside the subject area, not overlapping onto the background you are trying to drop out.
-Use the 'convert point' tool (if you click and hold the pen tool, it is at the bottom of the drop down list) to grab the bezier arms and adjust them to create curves
go to your paths window and click on the path you just created.
-There is a little black arrow at the upper right of the path's window. Click on it, and choose 'make selection', then choose 'new selection'
-Now you have your subject selected.
-Make a duplicate of your original layer
-Click on the icon at the bottom of your layer's palette that is a dark icon with a light circle in it... this will make a mask dropping out the background and showing only the subjects.
-Create a new layer underneath your subject layer (the one with the mask) and fill it with white.
This is really the best way to drop an image to a white background.
Hope this helps

magnetic lasso. you can also use the wand. It just depends on how much "stuff" is in the background.
