All bullets need gunpowder, the spring that your referring to is actually called a hammer, the hammer has a point in the centre that connects with the base of the bullet as the trigger is pulled, the contained explosion created by the gunpowder, is contained within the chamber thus giving propulsion. Pellets are normally found in cartridges used in shot guns, and these still contain a small amount of gunpowder in the base so that the shell can be launched.
Hope that helps

I can't believe I am answering such a question....
"Real" guns use propellants, also refered to as gunpowder. Gunpowder is a generic term used to cover the different types of propellants used in modern and older style firearms. Black Powder was the original gun powder. Very smokey, and dirty when ignited. It works well enough to get the job done, but at a less efficient level than modern smokeless powders- (propellants).
Smokeless powders aren't pefectly "clean", but they burn more consistently and effciently, as well as cleaner, and without the large emmision of smoke. There are several brands and varieties available, depending on the application.
Springs are used in guns such as BB and pellet guns, as well as toys like Air-Soft guns. But in a "real" gun, springs usually aid in the detonation of a primer by either a hammer, a firing pin or a striker. All of which strike the primer of a cartridge to ignite the powder, which in turn ignites the powder within. The pressure generated by the burning propellant is what propels the bullet out of the barrel.
If a "real" gun used a spring to propel a projectile, it wouldn't be called a "firearm", it would be a spring gun.
Thanks for the two points!

Basically guns use two types of gunpowder. The old "black powder" is used in the old cowboy styled guns as well as muzzle loaders. Many shooters still like using black powder and compete and hunt with the old style guns. You can tell when black powder is being used; lots of smoke and a very distinct odor.
Modern "smokeless" gun powder is used in guns like police and military carry. When they are shot, there is very little smoke and not much smell. Smokeless gunpowder is more efficient than black powder. It takes less of it to move a bullet at the same velocity.

Real guns use springs. Springs work together to detonate cartridges which are loaded with gunpowder and the expanding gases propel the bullets unlike in a pellet gun which uses compressed air or gas to expel pellets. This is why real guns are called 'firearms' and pellet guns are called airguns. Similar principal, different propellant.

real guns use gunpowder and primers
once you pull the trigger, the hammer or stryker hits the primer which causes a small spark or explosion, which sets of the powder, that propels the bullet out of the barrel.

Gunpowder is not an accurate term. Modern cartridges uses a powder called a "propellent", because it is not in the true sense an explosive like black gun powder.

gunpowder for the bullets to explode causing the pressure for the bullet to travel through the barrel and out.
springs usually in semi automatics. Once the bullet explodes it opens the slide and the SPRINGS take it back along with another round...
