From a father of the Bride,
A solid color pastel, light, not glaring.
Sky Blue, Light Pink, complement your eyes.
Not spaghetti straps, something just a little wider.
Not cut too deep but deep enough if you have the cleavage. Bright, clean complementary and boyfriend friendly.

Since you want a dress that would make people "talk" then get ready on spending a few bucks to get the perfect dress.
First you have to know what time the ceremony and reception and where it will be held - this is the basis of how formal your dress should be. If it is at night at fancy place then an elegant long gown with darker/subtle colors will be a appropriate. If it is held during daylight then a short, elegant dress with light colors will do.
Where to shop - there are tons online: you can look in the Yahoo! directory or at these websites: www.bcbg.com, www.dessy.com, www.verawang.com, www.watters.com, www.jimhjelmocassions.com and www.jessicamcclintock.com
The fit should be the right fit and should also compliment your personality for it to look stunning on you. After all, it all depends on the wearer of the dress on how stunning it will become.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

1. Your boyfriend should be proud of you either way.
2. You should not be wanting people to talk about you. Guests aren't supposed to dress in a way that will have people talking, because the person who they should be talking about looking beautiful day is the bride.
Get over your need to be pretty for others.
Okay, a lot depends on the wedding itself. Is it indoors or outdoors? Morning, afternoon, or evening? Formal or informal?
Except for formal or evening weddings, a nice sundress and strappy sandals look nice on most young women in the summertime. Color and style are up to you, what looks best on you.

Understand this: A wedding - that isn't your own - is absolutely NO PLACE to try to shine. No. no. no. no.
It's the BRIDE'S day to shine - not yours.
Sure. people will talk - but they won't say nice things - they'll make snide and gossippy comments about trying to outshine the bride - a sign of a HUGE insecurity problem.
Save the VA-VA! for another time. Not on someone's wedding day.
That said, you don't have to go to the wedding looking like a dowdy old sack of potatoes, either.
Wear a pretty sheath dress in a flattering color that shows off your figure - not too short a skirt tho - and wear a jacket over the dress during the ceremony. Not only do churches sometimes get cold, you want to be a little more conservative during the ceremony. Take the jacket off for dancing tho.
Keep your accessories modest - but classy - but bring a change of accessories for the reception. Like wear conservative heels and smaller jewelry during the ceremony - but switch to stillettos and bling later.
Same thing for makeup - wear conservative, demure makeup for the ceremony - but something you can "punch up" for the reception -
Again, this is someone else's day in the spotlight. By letting her shine and be the most beautiful on the floor - people will say nice things about you - and your boyfriend will be proud.
But again, don't ever try to outshine the bride - DISASTER and asking for your boyfriend to be ashamed of you.

Wear a cute sundress, maybe in red or blue to commemorate the season, never all white. I saw yet another wedding this weekend where a dingy girl (not the bride of course) wore an all white dress to a wedding. This one is cute and I think looks good on someone with dark hair.

You don't want to be scandelous looking and take away from the bride's day, so something like this is a good choice.
