Have you lifted the carpets and checked the sound deadening pads? They can get wet via wet roads and will start to smell very unpleasant before the carpets themselves become wet. You need to get the car checked on a ramp. There are likely to be a number of plugged holes in the floor pan. The holes, believe it or not, are part of the manufacturing process and the plugs are known to fall out sometimes. It would be worth checking that you haven't acquired a dead rodent or bird somewhere in the engine bay. They get a bit smelly too!

There is a process wherein enzymes are released into the vehicle and into the air vents. In my area there are a couple of mobile units who service the car dealers. The 'living' enzymes are sold at a janitorial supply store. I have no idea where you are but check the janitorial supply section of the yellow pages. The enzymes are alive and actually eat the bacteria that is causing the odor. It just takes a few minutes. I thought this sounded crazy until I witnessed the results. You can't see them and they die quickly after the job is done. MORE>>>>I'm in Florida. The # for the janitirial supply here is 321-242-2110. They can't ship to you but maybe they can assure that this crazy system exists and give you something to track down there. Uh..Cheerio

If it's damp smell - not easy - you have to find where the damp is coming from - otherwise you'll just be in a continual spiral of trying to mask it nad it returning. What car is it - there a some models more prone to allowing damp in than others -

If it is an air conditioned car - the smell can come from the vents - and it needs to have the air con treatment aerosol released into the car - about £5 - £7 in a car accs shop.

What type of smell is it?

When My Dad bought his Car, the previous owners had, had a couple of dogs which used to travel in the car frequently which had left it smelling doggy inside. He covered the upholstery in Bicarbonate of soda and left it over night before vacuming it up the following day and it hasnt smelt since.
For some reason the Bicarb neutralises the smell and gets rid of it!
