I always keep my car in fully automatic but when my boyfriend drives it he puts it in tiptronic. I hate him doing it because he really revs the engine and tries to get up to speed too quickly - it's a Punto FFS!

Well today I noticed that he nudged it up from 1st to 2nd when the revs reach four and a half. As I said, I'm clueless with engines but I think that that probably isn't good. My question is could this cause engine damage, or gear box damage and if so what damage. Or am I just being a scaredycat?

There will be a red area on the rev counter, in which it's not a good idea to run the engine. It's there to tell you you are running the engine too fast and should change up.

Don't know what it is on your Punto, but have a look on the dashboard. If your boyfriend is systematically revving the engine at or over this line then you should tell him to lay off...

Engine-wise, this isn't a problem. I expect if you look your rev-counter is red-lined somewhere around 6000 rpm. Below the red or amber makings is fine. In fact, it probably does the engine good to have a workout now and then. Regarding the tiptronic, I'm not certain, but I wouldn't imagine it would be a problem there either. Why not ring a Fiat dealer if you don't have a handbook?

The Punto is an Italian car - designed to be driven by Italian drivers. 4500rpm in a petrol car is nothing to an Italian, who wouldn't likely change up until 6000rpm. There will be a red-line on the revcounter and probably an electronic rev limiter at the point where the manufacturer has decided any faster would cause damage.

Don't worry about it. It may even help keep the engine healthy by "blowing the cobwebs out", keeping the intake and exhaust systems clear, and allowing the oil pressure and temperature to rise a little.

4500 rpm shouldn't be a problem, as long as he's not revving it that high for a long period of time. Unless the car is a diesel, then that seems very high, and while it won't do damage right away, it will decrease the lifespan of the engine over time.

Most modern cars have a "rev limiter" built in. This will keep the engine from revving so high as to destroy itself. You will know when it kicks in, which probably won't be until over 6000+ rpm on a gasoline powered engine.

If it's your car, don't be afraid to tell him not to drive like that. Keeping your engine rpms below 4000 will increase the lifespan of your engine, and will greatly increase your fuel mileage.

Its you!!

the redline is set lower than the engine will actually rev to protect it. ignore the people telling you its not safe to rev to 4500 they probably dont even know what a punto is.
the car revs to something like 6000, your bloke is doing you a favour driving the thing properly.
these cars dont like being pootled about in, they dont get up to temperature properly which mean the catalyst isnt working as it should so tell that to any eco do gooders who claim driving it hard damages the atmosphere.

With a triptronic gearbox there will be a fluid coupling between the engine and the gearbox. Normally this replaces the clutch that a manual car would have. Reeving the car and changing gear will cause extra wear and tear to the gearbox and engine and is not as a general rule a good idea.
Tell your boyfriend to get his own car so he can ruin it himself or get another boyfriend.

Without spinning your head, it's better not to rev the engine up. I havea Ford Mustang and I can tell you from experience that revving the engine all the time can start to increase the wear and tear. Using the triptronic transmission isn't hard on the car as long as you don't do whats called powershifting (IE, shifting near the redline). Tell him to stop and get his own car.

That's fine. Most modern engine management systems have rev limiters on them so if you tried to take into the red zone it withdraws power. Obviously if you reved the bo**ocks of a car all the time it would cause wear in the long run.

Change your boyfriend. He is costing you money, polluting the earth and has no sense as to what pleases you. He will never change but you can change him.
