I know, but for some strange reason people get upset when their baggage is immersed in a pool of water so the dolphin can have a good old sniff.

Well there is a similarity in the intelligence of dolphins and dogs but in their own way they are intelligent.
In short dolphins are smart because they are very good at communicating with each other and dogs are considered smart because they are loyal and have acute senses.
People don't use dolphins to search for drugs obviously because it would be unorthodox to have dolphins in a police department or in an airport. Not only would there be a difficulty in getting the dolphins to search for the drugs , but keeping dolphins is a high maintanance job that only special animal caretakers can handle , it is not as simple as keeping dogs. Dolphins require high maintanance and alot of space. The area were dolphins were being used in other words would have to be very rich.
Also , although dolphins may be considerd smarter they lack the olfatory advantages that dogs have. Along with their acute senses dogs carry a nose built for detection.
It contains special nasal ventricals that allow the dog to search for such things as drugs.Dogs have developed these senses because in nature canines like wolves use their noses to find prey and to tell who's territorry is who's
Getting dogs close to people is an easy task and a search can quickly be accomplished.
Dolphins can't detect drugs however smart they may be . Humans are smarter than dolphins and we can only guess were people hide contraband and drugs.
Using dogs is economically , and time consumingly efficient.
Maybe if dolphins could walk on land and talk and have the olfatory advantages of a dog , then we could use them , but then we would have to pay them for their work considering how smart and mobile they would be.
Hope this answered your question

Being smart has nothing to do with it. Humans are smarter than dolphins, and we can't detect them, generally. Dolphins need water to smell anything. A dog's sense of smell is acclimatised to the air, and far more sensitive. Also, dogs mature faster than Dolphins, and so they can be trained faster. They're cheaper to keep, and when they stop working, anyone can take them home any keep them as a pet. Try doing that with a dolphin.
All in all, I'd agree with the first respondent. But I would add a few more hahas.

It would be hard to take a dolphin on patrol down an interstate, and I think that the point is just the sense of smell anyway, of which dogs are very acute, and smart enough. It doesn't take smart to scratch at a door (that smells of pot) and get a doggie treat. Even at sea dolphins stay in the water. Because we are land creatures we need land creatures to do that work. But they will be great when the cocaine cartels use trained fish to smuggle.

You would then have to take a dolphin out of its natural habitat, water. Dogs share the same habitat and use oxygen just as humans do.
makes sense
you know instead of killing a dolphin use a dog.

good idea but it would be a bit difficult getting a dolphin into a council flat and also, a dogs sense of smell is better than a dolphin.

Because in the excitement they might knock over their fish tanks and the x-ray machines would explode!
You obviously don't know much about drug enforcement!
