Chess!
So what EXACTLY makes chess so great?
Let me count the ways...
Chess is great because the games always have such totally different endings. You can never tell beforehand, if it will be a quickie 15 move checkmate or a torturous 75 move end grind of pawns versus pawns. Every single game is so totally different.
In chess there's the never never ending adventure to become better, the infinite challenge of its endless depth.. the thrill of defeat which leads to just one more game..............
oh but most of all, I just love to be mated.. royally.. lol!

I enjoy a tremendous variety of board games - strategy, abstract, word, party, dexterity.... it is not an exaggeration to say I've played thousands of different ones. So many, in fact, that I can't say I even have a favorite. Here are some general qualities which I prefer.
1) Whether you win or lose, you should feel it was time well spent.
2) Congenial players against whom you are well matched.
3) A choice of strategies with none being clearly superior to all others.
4) Attractive, well-designed board, cards, pieces.
5) Mechanics (the system of rules) matter more than theme, but if the two fit well together, that's a plus.
6) Not too much "down time". Down time is when it's not your turn, and you can't even ponder your next move because the game position can change drastically.
7) Games in which people can make clever, memorable moves even if they don't win. For example, being able to cover two triple-word scores in Scrabble.
8) Original games that have not been deeply explored. I prefer chess variants to chess.

I would say my favorite game is Nascar Monopoly. Because I like Nascar and instead of places on the board they are cars. It is really cool looking and from my Yahoo! Avatar you can tell my love of nascar

Diplomacy. There really is no other board game that compares.
A distant second is Tigris and Euphrates.
