remember that old saying? to the victor go the spoils? yep. the ones who won the wars got the jewels and crowns. also, they are chosen by the current royals. if say the Queen Mother were to die, Charles, her son would rule, then William, Harry, and so on. If ALL the royal family were to die, (Highly improbable) the dukes and earls would take over, then the knights. ( Sir Elton John as King Elton? wow! there's a thought.)
The fact is they won the wars and so in turn get the spoils ( the crown)

In ancient times, you became royal the hard way by fighting for it. You stood in front of your troops on the battlefield and led them into battle.Once you conquered your enemy, you slaughtered the entire royal family, their servants, guards and their combined families so no one would come later during your reign to seek revenge.

The concept of King (or Queen) was around long before the conept of President came about. The Yoruba people of West Africa had a proud and prosperous civilisation thousands of years ago with a King as the recognised leader

Originally it was the most ruthless and murderous member of a tribe. This developed over the centuries to the point where they were rich and powerful enough to employ other people to do their murdering for them (armies).
Anybody who opposed them was considered to be a traitor.
Joseph Stalin was quite good at this sort of thing, Adolf Hitler not quite so good but he managed twelve years of supremacy.
The trick is to make the people swear personal allegiance to you, especially the army and police force
It takes a lot of practice and tradition to get it right.

Their ancestors killed off the opposition and became rulers of the conquered. They then set about inter- marrying with their cousins etc which is why so many had difficulty in conceiving and developed abnormal features ie Hapsburgs and their chins.

It's not a bad question, but didn't you study history in school? I am an American and haven't seen the inside of a school in 46 years, but I know this stuff. I think it was in 10th grade history class.

Well i'll put it this way, they're descended from William the Conqueror who decided to claim the throne that was bequeathed to him then taken from him. So he came to claim what was rightfully his. As for the original Kings of ye olde, I presume that their families were the most powerful of their day and assumed control that way.
