Both it and I are subjets. As "it" the first it reigns the form of "to be". Compare: I am it. It is I.

Unless you are using slang or "street" talk as your first responder did, there is no gramatically correct sentence using "I" as the only subject and "is" as the only verb. EXCEPT..... "I" is the letter just before "J".

The letter " i" is the 9th letter of the alphabet .

you didn't say that i has to be the subject

or
