I know it's a basic question, but need a straight answer! if you do this, does the laptop need to be open (I think that when you close it it switches off automatically, do most laptops allow one to disable this feature? I'd like to just put the laptop in a drawer and not be bothered by having 2 displays showing the same thing. Also, is there any loss of computing speed if I do this? Thanks!

Yes, you should be able to configure it so that the screen does not turn off when you close it, however, I wouldnt recommend leaving it in a drawer just incase it overheats.

I constantly plug my laptop into an external monitor / keyboard and mouse and shut the lid of the laptop. The monitor of the laptop will turn off when I shut it. It works at full effecency, there is not speed loss. Some laptops will go into sleep mode if you shut the lid, but there are settings you can change to make sure it doesn't do that.

Configure your laptop; Control Panel>Power Options>Advance, and configure "When I close the LID of my laptop------it should not do nothing".

There is no loss of Speed but your laptop can heat up so much if LID is closed while is is working.
