You can put any color in any pin so long as both ends are the same. It can give problems if it is over 3 feet long. Best to use the IEEE standard. O/W-O-G/W-Bl-Bl/W-Br-Br/W. After setting the color scheme trim length so the sleeve will crimp by the heel of the connector for strain relief.

For strait through cables, I always do it like this. Where Pin 1 is the left most pin when I am looking at the side of the cable without the clip.

1. Orange / White
2. Orange
3. Green / White
4. Blue
5. Blue / White
6. Green
7. Brown / White
8. Brown

If you are doing a cross over cable, crimp one end like above, and the other end like this. (Reverse the green and orange pins)

1. Green / White
2. Green
3. Orange / White
4. Blue
5. Blue / White
6. Orange
7. Brown / White
8. Brown

That's the only two kinds that I've ever made. I don't know if there are other ways or not. I would recommend getting a network cable tester if you are doing this very much. I have one and it's a life saver.
