Someone did some testing recently, and the best anti-virus (the one that caught the most) was Kaspersky.
It's not free, but the prices seem reasonable.

Kaspersky,
ActiveVirusShield by AOL,
ZoneAlarm
are the best three.
Though AVG has free anti-virus, anti-spyware and
anti-rootkit (for trojans etc.) - these are working fine
with many people, as with me also, and they are free at
www.free.grisoft.com

Its a piece of string question I am afraid and often depends on what Operating System you are using, what other programs you have running and the general power of your machine. Myself and many others find that AVG http://free.grisoft.com/doc/28415/lng/us/tpl/v5
The free version is good and I use it on several of my windows machines.

it's all a matter of opinion really personally I like Symantec Corporate Edition

bitdefender is the best...i've tried it out and it is better than any antivorus i've used before(kapersky,avg,norton,pc-cilin,symantec,avast,mcafee....)
