Never hired anyone but I have done it many many times. I did it for 4 different families and at least 4 times for each one. I took care of their dogs, the house and the property. I stayed at their house and was there most all the time for the dogs. The owners stated tehy prefered it that way becaues their animals got to stay in the comfort of their own home, the house was safe and everything kept up. I did it for different prices. One family paid me a $200.00 for 7 days, one family paid me $500.00 for a month and the one paid me $400.00 a month for 3 months straight. They provided the money for supplies. Every time Idid it the pay varied and it also for varied depending what they needed done.

Well, not only have I hired a pet sitter, but I own a small business of just such the thing called Sit and Stay Inc. My partner and I own a pet service business that does pet sitting, walking, training, and a few other things. For overnight stays (in-home) the average cost can be up to $50. We tend to charge $30, and we are one of the cheapest in the St Louis area. That includes several daytime visits of 20 to 30 minuets at least, plus overnight. If you are having someone come into your home, you want to make sure they are bonded (trustworthy with a company backing them) and insured (so you know if anything goes wrong it can be paid for).
Also, the more they are willing to share with you on company history, the better. We do many of the things you mentioned; taking in the mail and paper, taking out the trash, watering the plants. Just make sure you leave your vet information in case of emergencies and make sure the sitter has a way to contact you.
Feel free to e-mail me if you need reassurance or want specific help.

I travel for my job, and when close friends or family can't stay over with my pets, I have a petsitter look in on them twice a day. She's a vet tech, bonded, insured, been in the business for years, so I feel confident I can trust her with my keys - in fact she has her own set and her own code for my alarm panel. The cats seem to like her, and I like knowing that they're going to be looked after. It definitely beats a kennel, and I know some people just leave food out, but I think that's crazy. Pets get stressed when their owners aren't around, and you don't know what they might do. Someone should at least check them.
My pet sitter charges $18 a visit. It'll be different in different cities where costs of living are higher or lower.

My mom is a petsitter. She has all kinds of clients and all kinds of animals she watches. She charges $15 dollars per visit plus gas mileage, and that buys you 30 minutes at home with your pets. For $55 she will come to your house and stay the night , that includes the overnight stay and 3 daily visits throughout that day. Her rates are pretty average to other petsitters in our area. Make sure the person you hire has references and that they are insured and bonded.

My 9 year old got paid $100 to petsit for a month. She did most of the work, of course I had to remind her at times to walk the dogs and make sure they had fresh water in the middle of the day. She really did a great job though!
