I'm EXTREMELY happy to read this story from AOL. According to the Associated Press, civilian deaths in Iraq are down over 36% from last month. Apparently, this is because of the increased U.S. troop activity in Iraq. Soldier deaths are up, but the violence against the people and in general seems to be declining.

What do you guys think? Is this the start of a trend, or did the U.S. just get lucky this month?

I think it will get worse before it gets better while initially an increase of solider activity means more solider-insurgent encounters, that will mean more conflict and more casualties however I believe that this increased activity in the long run will pay off in establishing peace and order in Iraq. We can't fight this war half ***, we have to be all in or all out. Problem is we are there the can of worms is open and we have no choice at this point we have to finish what we started otherwise this will be a repeat of our campaign in Afghanistan back in the 1980's Had we finished what we started then there would have been no Taliban in Afghanistan to harbor Bin Ladin in 2001 which very well may have prevented Sept 11.

US military casualties are rising. This is exactly what the insurgents want. They want to attack the US troops and thus it is expected that civilian casualties will fall.

We could have all the fighters come out and lay down their weapons and you would have people on here telling you we were losing and it was not working.

I think we just got lucky this month. Or maybe the death squads we sponsored, like in El Salvador (John Negroponte, anyone?), weren't as active last month.

Sure it is working.
For whom and what it is working, is another question.
