I don't know why you should use PHP, but it's my programming language of choice.
I like that it integrates excellently with apache and mysql - all excellent platforms!
I like that it's an easy but yet powerful language to use, as compared with Perl, which is powerful, but the syntax takes some getting used to
I like that it's open-source - problems in the core are quickly identified and solved.
I like that there's a huge community of PHP developers and lots of open source projects (just visit http://www.hotscripts.com)
Lastly, I like that it's FREE! and I don't have to surrender a single cent to 'evil MS empire' .

PhP is "pre hyper processor". It is a language used essentially on web servers. Similar to C, it has numerous functions readilly available. It is very powerful and allows you to "build" your page on the server before downloading it to the client (the "user" looking at your web page).
Within its functions, you find access to databases, (mySQL), wich makes using any DB extremely easy. You find functions to encrypt or decript your variables, secure connections, ways to upload/download with ease, build and send HTML emails, zip and unzip files and much, much more.
A Web Designer who does not know PhP and MySQL (and I know a lot of them!) is NOT a web designer, but just an amateur.
One of its best advantages is that, as it is on the server, it is only the result of its compilation that reaches the client, in the form of an HTML file that the browser reads. The way the page has been built NEVER reaches the user, so your code is (relatively) safe and can't be stolen easilly.
