is it just to hold it a certain way i never actually understood this donut thing?

A donut has a hole so that it can be cooked all the way through....I worked at a donut factory I know :D

So that it cooks evenly all the way through. If it didn't have a hole in the middle, the centre of the donut would be gluggy uncooked dough.

They were going to put the holes around the outside, but couldn't figure out how to do it. Without the hole the center was all soggy so they put jelly in it after a while and solved the whole hole problem..

if the hole is at the side, wouldn't it look like it's already eaten?! plus making it hollow in the middle would allow them to generate more income because of lesser expenses in filling up this hole.

Bakeries use to stack them on sticks.So the holes allowed the pastery to be stacked for dysplay,and also to allow for even cooking.
