Sounds like the problem is your dog. Opossums do a lot of good by eating roaches and other bugs. Put your dog somewhere else for the night, and don't be so quick to go off and kill the guy.

1-call animal control, however this costs money (not much, tho)
2-if the possum keeps coming back to this specific tree it is for a reason. he may have a family or something in the tree but based on wat you said about him only showing up at night, i don't know. either way you really do need to get rid of it because it can cause a problem for any children you may have. The easiest advice i can gove is to let your dog bark at it- the possum most likely will not want to keep coming back if it's just going to be attacked.

Get a have a hart trap. Put canned cat food in it, and set it by the tree at night. Bring the dog in for the night. Possums are stupid, and greedy when it comes to food. When you trap it let it go several miles from your home. When you let it go don't worry they are not aggressive.

Tie up the dog for a couple of nights. The possum will leave.

Try a rat trap baited with fruit and/or peanut butter. Or a middle-sized live trap. The problem with live traps is you end up with a live animal to get rid of. And they will find their way back 'home' if you try to relocate them, usually.
Or teach your dog to climb trees.
The possums that invaded my space got chopped with my shovel. Not easy, and a little messy, but they never bothered me again.

I had that same problem kind of. There was a bunch of opossum living in the trees near by apartment patio. They killed one of their friends and left the body on my patio for my dog to find. The next night one was running back and forth and scratching at my sliding door to get in my house.
But when my dog saw this happening, he was ready to eat it and it ran away, never to return.
Maybe bring the dog inside at night, you know it would rather sleep in your bed anyway.

i somewhat agree with Robert, live trap would be easiest and least messy of all but not so sure about them not being aggressive. ive seen them at night in my trash so i hunted them down with my axe ! if you corner something wild be ready for a fight! damn thing almost got to me a couple of times before i got to it. best if you can open the cage at a distance somehow, then you got no worries.
