My new pc has a pci-express slot. How much system memory (ram) would I free by installing a video card? And how much memory should the video card have? (I know some come with 256MB, 512MB, etc.) Except for the pre-installed cards games I wont be playing other games.

In order to tell how much memory you would get, when you boot-up your computer, the memory will count up and tell you how much total you have. Once you are in windows, you can go to the task manager and check your physical memory in task manager. Subtract the difference to find out how much RAM your video takes.

If you do a lot of gaming, I would recommend getting something that had at least 256 MB.

I currently have a GeForece 7600 GT with 512 MB ram that I'm very happy with. Make sure your video card comes with shader 3.0 or higher. Also make sure it is compatible with windows Aero. Also if you do dual / tri monitor I would highly recommend nVidia over ATI.

If you aren't doing anything intensive, you don't need top of the line video cards. You could throw in a new card if you wanted...if you are going to anyways, you might as well go with the 512 MB card.

that depends on how your biosis set up to use your ram for video.
my roomates bios for example can use up to 8mb of ram for video. it all depends on your bios.

if you have vista, get a 128mb nvidia 6600 or something similar to that, you wont need much of anything if your not playing any demanding games
