Edmonton and Calgary are the largest cities. Both are generally safe unless you are in an Asian gang or something, and offer the most attractions and amenities. Both are becoming ridiculously overpopulated and are great if you like traffic jams and long lineups. Both cities have great universities and professional sports teams. Calgary is about an hour to the mountains and Banff, Edmonton a little more than that to the mountains and Jasper. Smaller cities like Red Deer, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Grande Prairie are also very safe, unless you are in a native gang, and have a lot to offer with a very much more rural feel to them.
Good luck in your decision. I am moving to BC myself!

Every city is safe in Alberta. Seriously...there isn't a bad area anywhere. The biggest problem you'll face is housing there's a low vacancy rate everywhere because of the oil boom.
