Why are Jews and Eastern Asians the smartest?

IQ tests show that certain ethnic groups are the smartest. (They also do this for different nations.) Why are Jews and Eastern Asians the smartest?

I don't think they're smarter. The Jewish culture and Asian cultures put a big emphasis on education. As soon as a baby is born the parents and grandparents begin arguing over where he or she will go to college. Parents keep an eye on how their kids are doing in school, make sure they do their homework, give them whatever help they need, etc.

On the other hand, general American culture is unfortunately very anti-intellectual. We don't want to be too smart, and we don't trust anyone who's too smart. Look at how political candidates sometimes even pretend to be dumber than they are, so we will trust them. President Bush even pretended not to be able to pronounce certain words so he would sound like a 'regular guy'.

IQ tests don't really measure 'smartness'. That is very hard to measure. They measure what you've learned so far, and how easily you can solve certain kinds of puzzles. IQ is not a good measure of how far you'll go in life, how well you'll do in school or anything like that. I would say the way IQ tests work, Jews and Asians have an advantage on the test, but I wouldn't say they have a higher IQ on the average than anyone else.

Because they are smart enough to know to study and know that if they want to get to the top, they're going to have to work hard. That's why most of them, correction, are the most successful. And its not necessarily only eastern Asians and Jews that are the smartest. Anyone could be smart if they really want to be. All they have to do is get their heads into the books. Not to mention that people could be different kinds of smart, like street smart or artistically smart. You could study all day and not know which store not to go into on the wrong side of town or whatever or know how to get to a place five times faster than it takes the average person. Or someone could read all day and while a person can analyze paintings to get the real meaning out of it. So its not just those group of people that are the smartest. Intelligence takes in all forms. It's hard to say if they are naturally smarter, all asians do is study, they spend 7 days a week at school and all that hard work only puts them 3 small points ahead of whites in an IQ test. Jews in all seriousness are actually white although some people might disagree, its still true, jews are caucasian. Jews also don't drink alcohol, party or do much of anything but study pray and eat kosher, and I seen there average IQ is 108 -114. Knowing that you be the judge.

2 reasons:

1. Complasancy: Americans (and other western industrialized countries) for example are so complasant...that being smart becomes more of an obsticle than anything... Where as other 3rd world nations education is hard to come by...and even if it does come by, it is more important to work...

2. Conformity: Many Eastern countries are extreme-conformists. They go crazy trying to be honorable and to accepted by their parents and society. So they learn all the answers in the book...

I would like to add, that knowing the answers in a book isn't the only type of smart. Many studies also show that easteners lack the creativity that westerners have an abundance of....

Although I appreciate it when someone knows the "right" answer, I tend to admire the person who has the creative answer...

As always however, It is the middle road that we should strive for...

i dont think one should generalise results from IQ tests..they can be unreliable..for example, ages ago, an IQ comparison across balck and white kids in usa showed that the whites are much smarter than the black kids..but then the questions were modified to reduce cultural bias the black kids scored the same as the white kids..they way people answer questions varies cross culturally...some cultures focus on giving the right answer without stressing on time taken for it, while others focus on the time aspect..one shouldnt ignore the background..a person may be considered intelligent in his own society, but not when mixed with a crowd...

jews and eastern asians are not necessarily the smartest..plus i dont think "races" exist..its just some ideas we attach to reinforce our preexisting beliefs..

Everyone is smart in their own, unique way. Some people are more intelligent than others because of their family background or upbringing. Some families may be wealthy so the parents may hire a tutor for their children. Some parents are highly involved in their children's education while others just don't care. So in short, a person's intelligence is influenced by their surroundings and such. But no matter what, every human being has the gift of intelligence. :D

Well, thanks, I'm from southeast asia! Maybe the reason is that, Jews and East Asians were once colonies of superpowers from the early days of man till until world war II. Here they studied to improve their lives and to be a part of the civilized world. I think it is because they both come from cultures with scholarly traditions.

All people's learnings begin with traditions, myths, and religions....East Asian religions are philosophies that must be studied and Jews of course, have the Torah.

Based on that, over time, already having knowledge of how to "study" things and well set up research traditions, these were handed down and then applied to other studies.
