As we all know, the NFL has done very well for itself lately. Negotiation of big TV contracts, recognisation as a global brand, new stadia, massive salaries for players, a far cry from the days of player strikes and the other negative stuff.

But...

Is there trouble on the horizon? Those of you who pay attention to the league during the off-season will remember the ALMIGHTY struggle that then-Commissioner Tagliabue had in mediating and successfully negotiating a new CBA. As opposed to the owners squabbling with the players union, it was the owners arguing amongst themselves.

The final margin was 30-2 in favour, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if the negotiation become a bloodbath next time. More money on the table might make the richest teams even more resentful of the revenue sharing concept.

I just hope that the next few years won't be the beginning of the end of the NFL as we know it.

Can revenue sharing still work?
Will it mean the end of the salary cap?
What do you think?

So bigsexydug, no offence mate, but if you don't like the sport, why did you answer the question?

You raise some good points AwesomeBill, particularly in regard to the NFLPA, so here's another question...

Just exactly how big of a monster has been created in the NFL?

For about a week, I was scared to death that things wouldn't get resolved, and I think Paul Tagliabue is doing a fantastic job of filling the shoes of Roger Goodell. I am concerned about the future of football, but I think Tag knows what he's doing and is making all the right moves to establish his authority over the NFL. A comforting thought: Tag probably has a group of advisers whose only jobs are to anticipate and report problems that could arise, and I would be shocked if he was not already giving some serious thought to the CBA and is at least thinking about what needs to happen. Yes, I think revenue sharing can work, and they'd better keep the salary cap in place. I hope the owners understand that a big reason why football is so successful is because every team has a chance to turn it around, not because of the success of any one team, and if their only motivation for being involved in football is money, then I think they need to find a new career and stop throwing a monkey wrench in the game of professional football.

I can understand and agree with your assessment but I need to point out that the NFL owners have been on the same page on most things regarding profitability.

I'm sure there have been many disagreements among them over the decades, but they have remained on point about looking out for themselves as a whole.

That said, if there is anything that can tear them apart it would be revenue sharing. However, it won't result in doom and gloom. They will simply adjust the numbers to maintain peace.

The greatest challenge for the health of the NFL is the NFLPA. They are growing more resentful of how difficult it is to pry money from the owners and true free agency. Certainly the players are overpaid and greedy but compared to MLB and NBA players they have it the "hardest" when it comes to their CBA.

I don't see any significant change to what is in place regarding the salary cap and revenue sharing for the next 15 to 20 years. Things will be augmented as ideas get kicked around, but the one constant in the NFL universe is that the owners will remain on top of the money heap.

i think there is trouble ahead. Especially now that the NFL have decided to scrap NFL Europe. Ok it wasnt the best league in the world but it was very popular in the first few years but it was neglected and im sure it could have produced some new talent.

As far as the squabbling is concerned, it always happens and has done for years and will do more and more as the rights to the NFL become more lucrative. Money always brings problems!!

First of all to Dan. Rober Goodell is filling the shoes of Tagliabue not the other way around.

The NFL is the best ran of all the pro sports leagues. What they are doing works. The problems they have is with player conduct and the fact Tagliabue when he was commissioner took a lot of the fun out of the game. Goodell is doing a great job.

The only thing that concerns me is when you lose owners like Hunt of the Chiefs. I don't believe most fans know what an important factor he was because of his love the for the game and his common sense approach to problems as they would arise. He had tremendous influence among owners because of their respect for him.
Football is the number one fan sport in America hands down. I cannot see the owners reversing the revenue sharing. They will always squabble amongst themselves especially with owners like Jones but I believe cooler heads will prevail and the legacy of people like Hunt will carry the day.

Reve sharing will work that is why football is the most successful of the major sports.
And the NFL channel. You know what is coming, pay for view. There will one one free game on a week and then it is pay for view. that is the next source of money for these people.
