Honestly, I don't believe that this is the true way of the Prophet and the companions.

Hadith - Sahih Bukhari Volume 7, Book 62, Number 1, Narrated Anas bin Malik

A group of three men came to the houses of the wives of the Prophet asking
how the Prophet worshipped (Allah), and when they were informed about that,
they considered their worship insufficient and said, "Where are we from the
Prophet as his past and future sins have been forgiven." Then one of them
said, "I will offer the prayer throughout the night forever." The other
said, "I will fast throughout the year and will not break my fast." The
third said, "I will keep away from the women and will not marry forever."
Allah's Apostle came to them and said, "Are you the same people who said
so-and-so? By Allah, I am more submissive to Allah and more afraid of Him
than you; yet I fast and break my fast, I do sleep and I also marry women.
So he who does not follow my tradition in religion, is not from me (not one
of my followers)."

Women are considered worldly needs. Now if theSufis are better than the Prophet, then you can say that they have no worldly interests. (And May Allah forbid you from believing that)

Allah says in the holy Quran (Surat Al-Kahf, ayah 46) that which means, "Wealth and children are the adornment of the life of this world."
Can anyone deny that? If one someone claims to find no joy and beauty in walth and children, know that there is something wrong; Allah's words are the most accurate.

Allah also says that which means, "...But of mankind there are some who say: 'Our Lord! Give us (Your Bounties) in this world!' and for such there will be no portion in the Hereafter (200). And of them there are some who say: 'Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire(201)!' For them there will be allotted a share for what they have earned. And Allâh is Swift at reckoning (202)." Surat Al-Baqarah

As we can see from the verses, asking for good in this world and the Hereafter is the best, as this Ayah brings. There are many more examples from the Quran and Sunnah, but I think I got my point accross. Remember, we Muslims are not blind followers. Anything that we here, we ask for proof from the Quran and the Sunnah. Allah the almighty said in the Holy Quran that which means:
“O you who believe! Obey Allâh and obey the Messenger and those of you who are in authority. (And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allâh and His Messenger, if you believe in Allâh and in the Last Day. That is better and more suitable for final determination.” (Surat Al-Nisaa’, Ayah 59)

This was the way of the companions, and should be our way as well.

Ironic, eh. Since the teaching of Islam promises materialistic reward in heaven. So they avoid materialism in this world to obtain it in the next.

I'm not knocking Islam. Most religions have some form of this paradox. Don't get me wrong . . . I respect any who find a simple peace in life. But to do so for a religion's promise of a reward in the afterlife is by definition another form of materialism.
