Finally I get to tell a parent why video games are beneficial :D
Well, the features of the DS are as follows:
Microphone (to speak into it so the game recognizes it)
Touch Screen (to multiply the possibilities of games)
Upper Screen (2 screens is really useful in some games)
Virtual Surround Sound Speakers (to simulate that sound is coming from everywhere around you)
Now the more intimate features
64-bit graphics processing (to allow for 3D effects)
High-Power Rechargable battery (8 hours to light 2 screens up with volume up of battery life, that's a lot)
High-intensity backlights (lights up the screen)
Consoles are sold seperately from games ALL THE TIME (the Wii is the ONLY exception)
The DS is a very, VERY good bargain considering what it comes with, plus its backwards compatibility with the Game Boy Advance makes it pretty much 2 systems in one.

The Nintendo DS Lite is a refurbished system of the original DS. Some differences between them are:
1) It's 30% smaller than the original DS.
2) The stylus provided in the DS Lite is longer and thicker than the original's. The slot where the stylus goes has been relocated too.
3) The screen(s) in the DS Lite are brighter than the orignal DS. In the DS Lite, you can now choose up to 4 brightness levels; the original DS has only one brightness level.
4) The Power Button on the original DS is located at the top of the D-Pad. The Power Button on the DS Lite has been relocated at the right side of the unit (near the stylus slot).
5) The Mic on the original DS is located at the bottom right corner; the Mic on the DS Lite is located at the hinge.
6) The START and SELECT buttons on the orig. DS are located at the top of the ABXY Buttons; the START and SELECT buttons on the DS Lite are located at the bottom of the ABXY Buttons.
7) The charger port on the DS Lite is smaller than the one on the original DS. (Originally you could use your GBA Advance's charger as a back-up charger)
8) GBA Games now protrude by about 1 cm. There is also a filler slot provided so that the GBA slot will be protected from dust and other foreign materials.
9) The original DS has more colors to choose from. The DS Lite sold in North America are only available in 3 colors: Onyx, Pink, and White. In Japan, there are 5 colors available: Onyx, Pink, White, a Green-Blue color, and a very dark blue color.
[Note: I posted this list from a previous answer]
Anyway, the mic is actually used in some games. Some games like Feel the Magic, WarioWare Touched, etc. use the mic to control the game, e.g. blowing a candle

It's just a better Game Boy. No it doesn't come with games. You have to buy those separately, unless you get a bundle. I have one and I love playing Brain Age on it. It has games to make you think faster, game for the brain. The microphone on it is for some games. Like I have a Super Mario game that you blow into the microphone or across it and it makes little Yoshi go up into the air. It has a touchsreen too so some games have sections where you use the touchscreen with a stylus. You can also use Game boy advance games on it but it doesn't have touchscreen for those games. It's actually a good gaming system for kids any age.

It is portable game system. The microphone is used by some games but not all of them fully support it.
It has pictochat basically it is a chatroom that only nintendo ds users can access and are in a radius of 20 min.
DS game download lets her download games from other users if she doesn't have the game. Really cool feature if she wants to try a game. Local Gamestops use to distribute demos.
It does not come with a game.

ok the ds has a mic because for some games you have to speak into it to interact with the game. Not used for online chatting tho so ur daughter is safe. I don't think that the system comes with any games but the games for it are mostly rated E which is like G in movies. It has a touch screen on which you can draw pictures and stuff. I would recomend buying it. There are lots of good games for it especially for children. Go to gamewinners.com for some reveiws and such.

The nintendo DS is a handheld portable video game system that uses 2 screens to play games on. the bottom screen is a touch screen that you use a stylius or your finger on to play most games. it does have a microphone that some games use. it is geared tward younger players but is great for all ages. most games for it are very kid friendly and lots of fun. It does not come with any games. Games usually run for about 20-40 dollars and you can get used ones at places like gamestop for cheaper. Also you can get a used DS for $119 I belive at gamestop but check with them for the excact price. Pending on how old your daughter is I would recomend getting nintendogs, or the pokemon pearl or diamond games. they are very popular. I hope this helps and you do get one for her I have had mine for a long time and i love it.

The DS is a good cheap investment that's high quality enjoyment. The Microphone has been used for a few things. In Nintendogs, You can name your dog and give them voice commands to do tricks which you can choose to do in contests. Lost in Blue, You used the Mic to blow smoke to start a fire.
Out side of that novelty, Nintendo has also collected a Variety of Brain games, Memory/concentration boosters, and puzzles which involve a different form of thinking due to all the features the touchscreen can make one adapt to.

DS is a greater suitable equipment to take everywhere every time and large for toddlers (yet isn't basically for toddlers) using fact it truly is greater inexpensive, harder, has greater toddler friendly video games and performs recreation Boy strengthen video games. the twin show is straightforward you employ the remarkable as a show and the backside as a splash show to bypass issues around or work together with the recreation your enjoying (you should use your arms or a pen/stylus). on your Daughter the DS appears like a large determination and he or she already know what recreation she needs Nintendogs a recreation the place you very own a puppy canines. (PSP in case you % to renowned) i could say the PSP is a greater suitable transportable equipment for older crowds and are appropriate on highway journeys using fact the battery existence isn't that large so which you may desire to recharge lots.
