they are wanting to rekindle the relationship, but don't want to appear desperate, saying they want to be just friends will save them the rejection just in case u don't feel the same about them, they say this to protect their ego's in case their plans don't work out.

Well, after we broke up we didn't talk. I had broken it off with him, so I think he as more hurt then I was. But took it okay. Eventually we got talking again, we had a good friendship beforehand so it wasn't that bad. After a few weeks we started dating again, he asked me. I think I missed what we had, rather then I actually felt that way again. After about two or three months he cheated on me. So that was the end of that. Were still friends, but I can't say I trust him as much now. But that doesn't mean you can't get back together and be fine. Good Luck :)

Well since it has been so long. The proble just want to be friends is that what you want? You have to decide and then go from there. If you think there is more to there feeling then ask, that is the best way to find your answer. Good luck.

My exes are exes for a reason, and I would keep it that way, I would not encourage a friendship with them, especially after 20 years.

1. Be Guarded.
2. Be Cautious.
3. Be Wary.
...and if you do socialize with them - when you think you can trust them - thats the time to repeat steps 1, 2, and 3 above.

The bottom line is not what they want but what YOU want. It's your life and you have the right not to have the person in your life (even just as a friend) if you don't feel comfortable with it.

They must remember you as a good friend, regardless of the other aspect of your relationship. It is a huge compliment for them to desire your friendship.

Just remember they are an ex for a reason and be careful with your heart :)

I wouldn't be friends with an ex, especially if I didn't know of their real motivations.
