Everytime that I think I am coming close to accepting as reality, some facet of human evil, I hear the next horror story happening in our "enlightened" society. It is sick. This is a question about human nature.

The actions of a few sick individuals should not be taken as representative of the nature of society as a whole. Any given population has its share of deranged people, and the bigger the population the more psychotics there are.
Humans, although still quite irrational and controlled by their emotions, on average have a good nature. The proof is in the pudding; if we were inherently evil, we never would have progressed as far as we have, and would've destroyed ourselves long ago. Go to a soup kitchen or a hospice ward, and you will see that for all our flaws, we are still a compassionate species.

Even if we had all the logic and reason in the World - I contend we will never be able to understand such an horrific despicable act!
That person was simply a disgusting individual, an incredible waste of skin.

I would say the only way would be that they are mentally ill and/or hallucinating. I know that I'm currently on ciprofloxacin for a bacterial infection, and one of the documented side effects is hallucinations. People have committed suicide just from taking this medication. Pretty nutty eh?
