One way you can do is this:

Think of both sides as fractions and set up like this:

8/52 = m/39

What you want is to manipulate this formula to say m=(something)

Right side says, m divided by 39.... how do you eliminate 39?
What happens if you multiply left side and right side by 39?

For the right side (m/39)*39 = 39m / 39... 39 cancels out and you are left with m.

You do the left side.

Since you know that 8/52 is the same as m/39, simply cross multiply. 52m=39x8. Divide. Then viola!

8 / 52 = m / 39
is a rational equation. The fractions can be cleared by multiplying the numerator of each term on both sides of the equation by the least common denominator (LCD).

52 = 4*13
39 = ....13*3
-----------------
-------4*13*3 = LCD = 156

156(8)......156m
---------- = ---------
52................39

Simplify and solve for m.
