ports on a PC are not open unless that port is in use. A program that protects these ports once opened are firewalls. I'm sure people below me will give you a long list of firewalls.

Gimp - graphics made easy
OpenOffice - ready for the future of word processing
Beryl - eye candy galore
K3B - cd/dvd burning made easy (and free)
Helix Player - neat little video player
MPlayer - integrates well with many codecs for video
Pidgin (my favorite) - was able to get rid of spyware AOL instant messenger forever!
Bittorrent - for those long haul downloads
Quake III Arena (GPL'd and open source now hahahaha) - something to keep me busy and the cpu burning

Ziepod - Just cannot live without it. A great podcast software. I like it because you can listen to podcasts without downloading them.

CCleaner - Cleans the registry and removes unnecessary stuff.

uTorrent - Tiny but freaking useful torrent client

Real download, because it helps me download things a lot faster and makes it easier to find them.

Limewire, download free music! And if I am looking for something that is hard to find, I can usually find it there.

Adobe Acrobat, for downloading documents, especially tax documents.

Skype for talking to family for free! Yes!
