Well, it actually is brilliant in the fact that it has surpassed page views compared to Yahoo!, I mean MySpace was created in what, 2002-2003? And Yahoo! has been around since about 1995? So yeah, it's a new way to keep in touch with your friends and family, and to meet new people. Also allows indie bands and film makers to bring out their work and possibly get noticed by higher up people. I wouldn't call it over-rated, but everyone thinks it's more than it is. Just depends how you look at it! Good question though!

I hate the fake people that are actually bots to harvest info. I hate not being able to delete a message from a friend properly. I hate that you cannot delete an expired bulliten. You cannot eliminate a person from a "browse", (check box don't show this person again. No saved searches. No ability to search by partial name. No search by what people are interested in. I think were all tired of the adverts.
Unfortunaltely myspace is less about social networking and more about dating.

I personally like myspace because it allows me my own web page to do what I want with. I like being able to make my own background and choose my own graphics and change them whenever I want. For me it's not only a way to keep in touch with people, or even meet new people, but it's a place to express myself, share pictures, and tell the world what I want through blogs.
If I wasn't on myspace I wouldn't have learned about my upcoming 10year high school reunion.

myspace is fun and i have alot of friends on it, but sometimes its really complicated and confusing. something like facebook is easier. but as far as overrated? i dont think so becuase WHO has HIGH expectations for myspace? its only what can be expected from an online friend space.

In terms of the effect it has on society: No.
In terms of what it actually is: Yes.
It's just a guy who got lucky trying the right idea at the right time. It's not like it was a brand-new idea, it was just the first one to have success with it.

Its a cool way to network, and keep up with old friends. Its pretty simple too, I don't like when people try to put a million little doodads on their page though.

It's only overrated if you have high expectations.
I, personally, use it to keep in touch with many friends and once and don't expect anything more from it.
If you're expecting it to change your life, you might be out of luck.
