It depends on what you plan on doing with it. If you just need something for school, and don't plan on playing any games on it then you're okay to go for a Mac. There are a lot of things to take into consideration. If you're getting it for school you need to consider what programs you may need to run and what restrictions those programs might have to your type of computer (requirements). In general when you buy a Mac you are paying for stability but you get less speed and power for the same amount of money that you would spend on a PC. However with a PC you trade off stability for availability of programs and support.

Ahhh.... the question of all questions.

Heres my opinion.

I have been born and bred on PCs, I love em and I hate em. You can expand them any way you want, custom build, adjust the operating system to do whatever you want (only if you know what your doing) and can run most if not all major softwares titles natively on a PC.

Macs have been lacking in the configurability and the software aspects until kind of recently, but since a few years ago, they are now running their operating system off of UNIX, AND many are now running off of Intel chipsets which means....

...you can run Mac OS, Linux, AND Windows off of 1 computer!!! That is the holy grail. All this and minimal loss of performance on the non-native operating systems.

So if you want a computer you want full control over hardware and to save some money on the way, go for a PC.

If you have some cash and want a fun computer without tweaking too much, Mac is the way to go.

Hope this helped, Goos Luck!!!

EDIT:

for those bashing macs and linux, you are clearly not savvy techies and should not be posting in these forums.

I am A+ and Network+ certified. This means I went to school and learned hardware, operating system, and networking basics.

Mac users will tell you all kinds of things about how Macs are perfect and are easier to use than Windows. It is all pure BS, Yahoo! Answers is full of Mac users asking about problems with their Macs.

Windows has pros and it has cons as do both Linux and Mac.There is no perfect OS.

I own a PC and I dual boot both Windows XP and Debian Linux. I use Debian more than I use Windows.

As far as Linux being complicated and difficult to install, I would say it would depend more on which distribution you install. I found Xandros Linux to be extremely fast and easy to install, and it looks and feels so much like Windows XP that I almost didn't notice I was using Linux. SuSe was alot more complicated and frustrating to install and setup, I never could get everything to work. I recently switched to Debian which was just a little bit more complicated to install than Xandros, but no more difficult than installing Windows. I did a little research on the web and found an in-depth article on how to install and setup Debian. It was extremely easy, and I now have a fully functional Linux computer.

As far as Debian being easy to use, I recently installed it on a friend's laptop, his 5 year old daughter has been using it to play games and watch movies. All I did was give them a 10 minute demonstration a week ago, my friend told me using the laptop is as easy as using Windows.

You don't have to be tech savvy to use Linux. You do need to be open minded, willing to read, look things up, and ask questions. I could help anyone set up a working Debian machine. The amount of time it takes to install and setup will depend on how fast your internet connection is. I have a 1.5mps connection and it takes about 2 hours to install and 30 minutes to setup.

If you have questions, need help, or would like to discuss your options in-depth feel free to e-mail me.

A Windows PC. Macs and Linux suck.

tpennetta: PCs run just as well as Macs, if not better. I AM tech-savvy and I have tried these OSes. Linux is just too hard to use for the average person, configuring resources, compiling source files and all that crap. Try THINKING before you post something stupid next time like "you're not tech-savvy if you bash Mac and Linux". They both utterly suck.

Oh yeah, these aren't forums you retard.

Well, it really depends on what you want to use it for. If you want compatibility for about anything you can imagine, choose Windows (PC), but if you want graphics, choose Apple (Mac)

Pc is better for games and MAC is just good because it's there

My dear friend... NEITHER! Look through the web site and find out why neither... There it should say where you can buy a pre-installed GNU/Linux desktop/laptop ready to go...

BTW: there is a windows emulator so you can play your favorite windows games if you decide to get Linux, it's called WINE.
