I just got 3 silver dollar fish in a 30 gallon tank with 3 zebra danios. I think that one of the silver dollar might have ick. I have read that you can add salt to treat ick, except to scaleless fish. Do silver dollar fish tolerate salt?

Silver dollars are related to tetras and are sensitive to both salt and medications, so you will have to reduce the amount of either that you use to 1/2 the suggested dose to start. From there, you can try to build gradually to the full dose, just be careful and watch them for signs of being overly stressed and be prepared to do a 10% water change if necessary to reduce the amount of salt/medication in the water if they appear so. (I've been able to go up to full doses of salt and Quick Cure with them as long as the increase from 1/2 dose is gradual). It also helps to raise the temperature of the tank to 86-90o if the fish will tolerate it.

Salt is great for all fish. At walmart you can buy aquarium salt, just follow the instructions on the carton. I cant remember off hand how much to add..i think its a tablespoon per 10 gallons....im sure thats not right....

Be sure not to get the salt directly on the fish when putting it in, it will burn them!!

I run the pet dept at our walmart here in town, what i do for the angel fish is fill a betta container (one that you purchase it in) i cut a few holes in top and I put that in the middle of the tank...Angels like the salt to destress..............but what im getting at is you can put the salt in the container(the right amount of course) and drop that in the middle of your tank and the salt will slowly dissolve.........................or once you bring the container with the salt in the tank go to the bottom and slowly pour it along the bottom.

I really never have a problem adding the salt, due to there being a huge resevoir that feeds the water to all the tanks.

Good luck......hope my rambling made sense!!

ick is also cause by temp change, stress ...you can add the salt, but if i were you I would get some ick medication. there are drops and also tablets. Ick can spread quickly!! catch it now...........ick looks like the fish was sprinkled with salt btw

Why not just go purchase some medicine specifically designed to treat ick?

I believe that all tropical fish do well with aquarium salt. It helps promote fin growth and makes the fish healthier. You don't need too much though - or it will make them sick.
