Like in America, the average thing is to be right-handed. Parents put the pencil in their baby's right hand when they teach them to write. Is it different for Russia?

No, as everywhere else in the world, the majority of Russia's population is right-handed. I don't think nationality has an effect on which side of your brain is dominant...
A couple decades ago, most children were forced to use their right hand, even though some were left-handed. My mom was a leftie, but her parents would tie her left hand to a chair when she was drawing so eventually she became a rightie. She still uses her left hand to wash dishes and cut things though.
Nowadays they don't do that to kids anymore. No more hand discrimination. :)
And in response to one of the previous answers, Russians drive on the right side of the road.

It's the same for Russia. About 15% of the world's population is left-handed, but people of Asian and Eastern European (i.e. Russian) descent are more left-handed than any other ethnic groups in the world, while people of Western and Northern European, and African descent are less left-handed. Still, majority of Russia is right-handed.

plus if you look at all those Russian tennis players, there are so many of them ranked in the top 20, and they are all right-handed.

Parents don't teach a child to be right or left handed. Why would Russian's be different? Is it because of where they are on the globe? Or is this just a joke?

I'm not Russian, but I'm a left handed kiwi. They tried to make me right handed, but I'm a lefty.

Apparently in the 50's to the 70's, the ettiquite was to be right handed. You were smacked on the knuckles with a ruler if you wrote with your left hand. so now I can right with both hands, but perfer using my left.

I do not think parents put a pencil in their baby's right hand to make them right handed. You are born either using your left brain or your right brain. People who are left handed use the right side of their brain.

Although Americans may be predominantly right-handed there are left-handers amongst them, but you're right.
Many Russians do favour their left hands.
