Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.), the chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, said Sunday he wants to “more widely” use surveillance cameras across the country.

“The Brits have got something smart going in England, and it was part of why I believe they were able to so quickly apprehend suspects in the terrorist acts over the weekend, and that is they have cameras all over London and other of their major cities,” Lieberman said.

That is one slippery slope. I have yet to hear evidence that the arrests in London (so far) were due to anything recorded on camera anyway (I might be wrong, but I think they've made arrests based on police work, not on forensic surveillance).

[edit] To those who say they have "nothing to hide" - how do YOU know? Who's to say whether you have anything to hide or not? THAT's the whole point, people.

We have such cameras throughout the city of Ipswich, the only result in nearly five years is some good footage of violent crime
No successful prosecutions

The main reason we even have a country is because we were liberated from another. Wow all these people want the liberals to leave. We'll if you don't think you are liberal then you need to move back to the country you liberated from. The reason we have rights is because we opposed tyrany. How be it that we alow tyrany again from within our own country. If we stand by and alow this then we diserve to be english again and pay 200 plus years of back taxes to that country for all the battles and frustration we caused them. If we wanted a king to govern us then we should have alowed it. We are liberal from a liberated nation. We have always been attacked by terrorism in our country or others. Just read the past 200 years of newspapers. Our soldiers have been under terrorism since we began our country. Remember the british attack? We do not need a tyrant controling our every move. If we did we wouldn't have revolted against our king in 1776. We may not have privace in our streets but we right now have freedom to be in public. If we alow this we will not have privace in our own homes. Don't you all think these cameras will be pointed ownly at the streets. What says they wont see in your window.
And all of you say I don't care cause I don't have anything to hide. What logic is this, think about it. If you don't have anything to hide then why should they have right to tape you.
The system as we have it is good, why change that. Who says these government officials have our best interest at hand. Are you willing to give a person you don't know a blank check to do whatever they want with your life.
This is why we have the checks and balances of the government offices.
They have already told us in the news that bush has done the same as nixon and taped opponents to his office. Is this realy "fighting Terrorism" ?
Now attack me at whim but attack me with more of an argument than just because you have nothing to hide. Well mabe I do, My Freedom.

You have no right to expect privacy when in public. The Courts ruled on it several years ago. I believe it was over a case that involved the rummaging of someone's garbage and they found and published documents. The Court ruled that once it is in the garbage or you are in public you have no right to expect privacy. If you think about it, every time you go shopping, to the bank or to get gas your on a surveillance camera, when you drive you are on freeway or redlight cameras.

It's a perfect situation for a totalitarian dictatorship. First you have them in the street then you have them in the home.. Read 1984 by George Orwell. He predicted all this. The constant state of war and the suppressions of citizen's freedoms by the government.

Yes, this is a new era in world history and we need to take strong measures to deal with it. I support the Patriot Act, also. If the Prez himself wants to listen in on my petty problems, so be it.

Plus, I can't wait for the drug dealers to be chased off our streets. Only those who have something to hide need fear these types of developments. They strengthen our capacity to maintain our civil liberties and current lifestyles much more than they detract from them.

Do you think "more widely used" means the same as "on every street in America?"

If you are in a public place, you have no "expectation of privacy," therefore your rights aren't being violated by being videotaped.

Why not? I don't have anything to hide. It could also help cut down on muggings, kidnap, rape... and other violent street crimes. As long as no one is targeting a single group or person... I have no problem with it.

What right is being violated by surveillance? If you're not doing anything wrong, there is no reason to object.
