Stranger on the Third Floor (1940), Fury (1936) ,You Only Live Once (1937) , Touch Of Evil (1953). There's a list of 35 Film Noir classics at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_noir.

The Cinemateque just did a poll on this. You can find my list as well as the lists of multiple film-goers (although mine is obviously the best).

As you can see my pick for the greatest film noir is Sweet Smell of Success. I debated putting Chinatown at the top of my list, but decided against it since it's technically "neo-noir."

There are useful "film noir" lists with ratings by the public at both netflix.com and imdb.com, though both contain "neo-noir" also. The latter breaks down the ratings by age group and gender. Billy Wilder's Double Indemnity is #1 at netflix, and his Sunset Boulevard is #1 at imdb !

I highly recommend Gun Crazy (1949) and Gilda (1946). Save Gun Crazy for last; subsequent picks will seem flat in comparison.

You might want to consider searching out one that has some aspect that interests you, e.g., casinos (Gilda), horses (Asphalt Jungle, The Killing), abstract art (Scarlet Street), Lake Tahoe (Out of the Past)....

Check out 'The Killers'. It fantastic and probably one of the best film noirs out there.

The 'Big Sleep' with Bogart and Bocall is pretty good too.

The one that started it all. John Huston's "The Maltese Falcon". It started the genre in 1941 and still reigns as the best of its style.
