I don't know but I pretend I'm Jack Bauer ALL the time! :)
I think it's because we are always ourselves no matter what we do. Too much of any person is a bad thing, including yourself. It's good to get away from my own mind every once in a while.

It makes us feel better about ourselves when we are able to convince others we are as nice as we believe we are. Helps our self confidence and raises our sense of worth in the eyes of others.
In society, everybody does it. Being all nice and polite and prudent, when what we might be thinking of is throttling the other fella. People actually end up liking one another better, and that's how people can all get along.
