What was John Travolta doing in the early to late eighties? He seemed to disappear for awhile.?

Just curious, he's one of my favorite ever actors. Just watched "Grease" on TV tonight - he looks so young on that one!

Didn't he and Kelly Preston get married and decide to start a family? I believe he was also going for his pilot's license and flying aircraft a lot then, too. He may have semi-retired so he didn't burn out in the public's opinion. He'd been working pretty hard since "Welcome Back Kotter" days.
