What if there was no Black Sabbath in the 70's What would bands sound like today? Would there still be metal today? Was Black Sabbath the only band to have balls and play evil dark heavy riffs to start a whole new kind of music?

they were the first to use the "tritone" heavily...the chord that was outlawed in the middle ages, because it was so evil sounding...it was called the devil's chord

thanks to Black Sabbath, we have heavy metal as it is today...

I think Heavy Metal is an inevitable force, Black Sabbath not existing wouldn't mean metal wouldn't exist, metal would have just been postponed, like what the Terminator said in Terminator 3 about Judgement Day. Someone would have eventually came along, turn the gain up all the way, rip the knob off, and hammer out some evil-inspired music.

There would still be metal, I think, but it might have taken a lot longer to get here. We still had some heavies back then like Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple.. even the Scorpions started making music in the early 70s. But the world of metal will always owe a debt of gratitude to Black Sabbath.

Well, those heavy, lumbering riffs were already in use thanks to Jeff Beck, Vanilla Fudge, Led Zeppelin and other bands. All Black Sabbath really did was tune them lower and slow them down.

Of course, it's possible that I'm understating their importance because I really very much dislike Black Sabbath; too little diversity, and too little adequacy...
