shaking steering wheel can mean many different things from a front end piece going out to something as simple as your wheel balance is off. If it only occurs when you brake, it could mean brake rotors are warped.

Does the shaking occur all the time, or at specific times? (ie speed you're driving, are you braking?)

Well, there are a few things that it could be. One which is probly the most typical. Wheel Balance. Your tires should be rotated every 6000miles. Balance and rotate every 12000 miles. Now if your wheel vibrates when braking, typically this leads in the front rotor out of round. and needs turning or replacing. Now, also take note, you could have what is called a broken belt. Where the wire in your tread actually break or seperate. Best way to check this is have someone drive your vehicle and look at your tread patterns, if it shifts oddly from side to side, thats a good indication. Those are about the three main things that lead into vibrations. Not the only, but the most common. From your brief description, i would lean toward tire balance. happy motoring.

As said before (by someone else) it could be many things. It also depends on if the car is front or rear wheel drive.

If the shaking is constant at high and low speeds-you could have something stuck in the tire (like a nail) or your one or more of your tires is out of balance.

If the shaking gets worse at faster speeds-This could be anything from a bearing having been thrown or going out, to a tie-rod, etc.

If the vehicle is front wheel drive and it gets worse at faster speeds, this could be a bent/warped half shaft.

You should be able to take your vehicle to a local repair shop for a free estimate. Hope this helps.

Not just tires, but wheel rotor or drum warped, bad ball joints or worn suspension parts. Also loose lug nuts. CHECK those first, because that's an easy fix! Do it NOW. Then check for harder things under the car. You can also jack up the front end, one wheel at a time, and spin them manually, to see if they appear out of round, or don't spin straight. But have it checked out SOON. - The Gremlin Guy -
