Ok, I've wondered for a little bit now if it was possible that Harry might be related to Godric Gryffindor. I've thought that Voldemort would be more likely to want to go after a descendant of Gryffindor's due to his being the last heir to Slytherin. Slytherin left Hogwarts after an arguement he and Gryffindor had. Gryffindor believed anyone should be allowed to attend Hogwarts while Slytherin only wanted only wanted to teach the pure-bloods. Voldemort may well have viewed his ansector as being the better of the two due to how he felt about his own heritage and probably held a grudge against Gryffindor and his descendants. So he may have selected an heir of Gryffindor as his equal. Yes, he picked the half-blood Harry rather than the pure blood neville, but what if he picked him because he is Gryffindor's heir?

And in "Chamber of Secrets" Dumbledore tells Harry only a true Gryffindor could have pulled Gryffindor's sword from the sorting hat, thus proving he belonged in Gryffindor. The way he said it seems to have meant anyone in Gryffindor could have drawn the sword from the hat. But what if he really meant someone descended from Gryffindor?

I understand the point you're making. However, I wouldn't reach as far as this. I think Godric and Harry have a common bond, but I wouldn't think they are related. However, if they were, I wouldn't find your theory so far-fetched. I think it's valid, but either way I don't think it will really have an effect on the book.

However, I would like to pose that the Horcruxes, which will be central to the last book, will have something to do with the four houses. So, you never know, your theory may be proven in this last episode. Let's see if it's right.

I doubt that Voldemort picked Harry because he could possibly be the Heir of Gryffindor, but Voldemort chose Harry because Voldemort thought that he could be a most likely danger to him and because Harry was Half-Blood, like Voldemort.
There is a possibility that Harry is related to Godric Gryffndor.
Jo has said (At World Book Day, in 2004), "People are always wondering who Harry might be related to. Maybe he is."
Voldemort has wanted to have a Horcrux that represents each of the founders of Hogwarts. He has already (supposedly...) one from Hufflepuff (the cup), one from Slytherin (the locket), something from Ravenclaw.....but, the only remaining items that belonged to Godric Gryffindor was the sorting hat and sword (If my memory serves me right).
And both the sorting hat and sword are both safely in Hogwarts. So, there is a grand possibility that Harry has been made a Horcrux to represent Gryffindor. I could be wrong, I could be right....its a theory, after-all. Only book seven will tell.

Your theory is VERY good, but I'm afraid JK Rowling herself has somewhat denied this theory in an interview just after Half-Blood Prince:

JKR: There's nothing serious or sinister about [Harry's Grandparents'] deaths. I just needed them out of the way so I killed them.

MA: That sort of shuts down Heir of Gryffindor [theories], as well.

JKR: Yeah. Well - yeah.

But, there's still a possibility of someone else being an heir. The current Wizard of the Month on jkrowling.com is Godric Gryffindor, and there is a picture of him:

Some people think that his green eyes and red hair makes it look like he's distantly related to Harry, while others think it might be Dumbledore's ancestor.

Good theory! If JK Rowling hadn't implied that it wasn't true, then I'd be behind you :)

yeah i thought the same thing. and also did you notice Godric's Hollow adn Godric Gryffindor
and wouldnt that just be the ultimate good vs. evil showdown. Slytherin's heir vs. Gryffindor's heir.

"only a TRUE Gryffindor could have pulled that out of the hat"~Albus Dumbledore

and i just thought of this!! Voldy had made a horcrux out of something of all of the Hogwarts founders. Except Gryfinndor's. and Dumbledore specifically said that "as far as we know the only artifact of Gryfinndor's is in my possession" reffering to the sword.....but if Harry is the heir......then the scar................oooh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nah I doubt it. First of all, only true Gryffindors GET INTO GRYFFINDOR and all those people can't be possibly related to Godric. Unless someone in his family just spurted out babies (oh my!) because they're all near each other's age.

And also Voldemort did not want to kill Harry because of Gryffindor or Slytherin or any of that. He heard a prophecy which stated that a boy born in July and all that (Harry) would destroy him and he didn't hear the last part of it which would include Neville too and he sought off to kill Harry before Harry could destroy him.

If Voldemort heard that bit of the prophecy, he might not have chosen Harry.

Voldemort doesn't care about anyone but himself. The only reason he would hurt Harry is because he's protecting himself. He's obsessed with immorality.

You know how some of the horcruxes are believed to be from the houses themselves? Well they haven't found an imporant Gryffindor item remeber? The sword is hanging right there in the headmasters office... So if harry IS a descendant of Gryffindor somehow, could it be possible that hes a horcrux??? The missing horcrux from GRYFFINDOR? Yay! i just thuoght that one up haha

i don't think he is related to Godric. Voldemort picked Harry because Harry is a lot like Voldemort. they are both orphans, outcasts and had a muggle-born parent. Voldemort sees a lot of Harry in himself. I also think that Godric's old house or what may or may not be left of it is a Hoarcrux. Dumbledore felt that Voldemort wanted relics of the 4 creators of Hogwarts. i'd say whatever is left of Godrics house or where it use to be would be a relic or a special place. look at where he put the locket. maybe he did something like that were Godric's house use to be. so i don't think that Voldemort picked Harry because of his heritage but more because of who he is as a person but i still think Godric plays a part in where Voldemort put one of his Hoarcruxes.

Harry is a pureblood! His mom and his pop both went to Hogwarts, so they were witch and wizard.

I've never gotten the impression that Harry's family is "old wizarding stock," so I'm thinking Harry isn't a descendant of Godric Gryffindor.
