A few things you can check:
-If you have a 3.5 floppy drive, make sure there is not a disk in it before you try to boot your computer...most computers have a default setting of trying to boot from the floppy first. This used to be the most common error that people would make when most computers had floppy drives and then panic thinking something was wrong with their computer.
-enter your BIOS settings...usually this is done by hitting a certain key as the computer is starting up (your computer will say "press the ** key to enter setup). Depending on which version of BIOS you have (Phoenix, Award, etc) the location of the settings will be slightly different, but make sure your boot sequence is set to boot from the hard drive or floppy drive first and not an external device or CD-ROM.
-see if you can boot XP into safe mode by pressing F8 on startup and selecting safe mode or safe mode with networking support.
-try a virus scan...you could have a boot sector virus in there.
-see if you can borrow an XP disc from someone and try to boot your system using it...they are bootable...you just have to go back into BIOS and set the boot sequence again so that the CD-ROM is first.

Hopefully one of those things will work!
Good luck.

Since you don't have your own XP CD, see if you can borrow one because you will need one to do the following repair. This is legal in that you are not installing, just repairing.

Put your XP disk into your CD drive and restart your system. This will start the XP installation process. When you come to the screen that asks if you want to install XP or if you would like to “Repair” XP, choose Repair. This will open the repair console command prompt. At the prompt, type: chkdsk /r. (There is a space between the k and the /. Now hit “Enter”. The repair should now start. Allow it to run until it stops. This can take some time, so be patient.

If all goes well, XP will replace any and all missing operating system files.

This is going to be tough since you don't have the installer.

Try to find a friend who has the XP disk, and put it in the cd rom drive, and have your computer boot from CD ROM.

Then, when it asks you where you want to install, and it sees previous versions of windows xp, click on it, and then select repair instead of new install. It should easily fix all of your booting problems.

Ask around your town or work for the cd, those should be easy to find now a days.

I have my old Pentium III -- ran the Windows advisor on it and was told it wouldn't work.

Did you run the advisor before trying XP? If not, here it is:

seek your C: force for that express record. as quickly as you detect it, reproduction it to that folder (C:software~a million...) the place it has an blunders loading. Your pc might have a matching record to what it particularly is finding for saved someplace else. tell me if this works.
