If you plan on matriculating at a university in a country you do not have citizenship, then you will need a student visa (or some other type of resident visa) in order to enroll. In order to apply for a student visa you a required to possess a passport, so yes ... in that type of a situation you need a passport.

While the university itself may not expressly require to see the passport, it will require to see proof of a student visa after your arrival. In the majority of cases student visas are permanently affixed inside a passport.

Only if you are a foreign student to that country. This includes outside the USA for college here in the USA.

Otherwise if you are a USA citizen, born and raised, No you don't need a passport to go to college here.

A passport is just another form of identification, like a birth certificate and a driver's license rolled into one document.

Hope this helps.

Not if you live in the country where the college is located.

Not unless you are going to college in a country other than your own.

Not if you are attending college in your own country, or at least not in the US if you are from here.
