I know the internet idea came from a spider in the amazon. they are small, all live together and create a huge web that they all share and catch lots of things from insects to small animals. I am not sure who actually had the idea but it was first used for the military.

Before there was the public internet there was the internet's forerunner ARPAnet or Advanced Research Projects Agency Networks. ARPAnet was funded by the United States military after the cold war with the aim of having a military command and control center that could withstand nuclear attack. The point was to distribute information between geographically dispersed computers. ARPAnet created the TCP/IP communications standard, which defines data transfer on the Internet today. The ARPAnet opened in 1969 and was quickly usurped by civilian computer nerds who had now found a way to share the few great computers that existed at that time.

The military had it in the 60's. I was there. It was called twixing, at that time, in the Air FOrce. It became more sophisticated and personal computers became more available and Al Gore introduced a bill to congress that it be opened up to civilian use and exploitation. Hence his claim to have invented it.

Vinton Cerf

The Internet is a worldwide network of thousands of computers and computer networks. It is a public, voluntary, and cooperative effort between the connected institutions and is not owned or operated by any single organization. The Internet and Transmission Control Protocols were initially developed in 1973 by American computer scientist Vinton Cerf as part of a project sponsored by the United States Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) and directed by American engineer Robert Kahn.

The first recorded description of the social interactions that could be enabled through networking was a series of memos written by J.C.R. Licklider of MIT in August 1962 discussing his "Galactic Network" concept.

I would say this is the guy. He had the vision and the concept.

The conceptual foundation for creation of the Internet was significantly developed by three individuals and a research conference, each of which changed the way we thought about technology by accurately predicting its future:
--Vannevar Bush wrote the first visionary description of the potential uses for information technology with his description of the "memex" automated library system.
--Norbert Wiener invented the field of Cybernetics, inspiring future researchers to focus on the use of technology to extend human capabilities.
--The 1956 Dartmouth Artificial Intelligence conference crystallized the concept that technology was improving at an exponential rate, and provided the first serious consideration of the consequences.
--Marshall McLuhan made the idea of a global village interconnected by an electronic nervous system part of our popular culture.

The United States military invited the Internet from what I understand. It started as a military means of communication and then began to be used by civilians.

Actually it was a merger between the US government and a few private companies. They designed a network for the government to use then I believe the companies sued to allow the use by private citizens as home computers became more affordable.

There is no one person who invented it. It just sort of slowly evolved from a couple of computer networks and turned into the global network it is today.
