An odd coincidence, but go back and listen to the music of both parties again. You'll notice the devil's music has a real heavy back-beat and almost resembles a hard-rock song, while johnny's music follows a bluegrass format. The belief about this song is that the band didn't like the heavy metal music popular in the day, and thus made it the format of the devil's music so it would purposely lose and promote country and bluegrass over heavy metal. Listen closely and see if you agree...

Actually, Johnny wins because his simple bluegrass picking is more true to country roots as compared to the "band of demons" and the wild fiddle when the devil plays.
Who picks up the reference that the devil is in New Orleans?

Nobody did :-) In the song, the devil had a "band of demons" that played with him, but there was no expressed preference for the Devil's music to Johnny's.
I love that song!!
