Its my understanding that it is possible to creat a doomsday device with an isotope that has an extremely long half life so that just about everyone will die from radiation exposure.

There will be those few who will go deep underground for the rest of their lives and propogate there for a generation or two until its safe to come out again. Thats why the "Time Left" clock is set at about 3 "minutes" before "midnight".

"Mr President, we cannot allow a mine-shaft gap!"
Dr Strangelove

The idea was to produce the ultimate fear to attack in the minds of the enemy. The bomb would go off automatically if a country was invaded, and it would be sufficiently massive to throw up so much ash and dust into the atmosphere as to block out sunlight. This could reduce global temperature and make photosynthesis difficult, collapsing the food chain, and causing mass extinction.

The question is - would we survive if we moved underground into the mines?

All of our everyday matter has an extremely long half life. It is stable.

In the context of earth, a doomsday machine would be an object capable of completely destroying one or more of these: human life, all life, the planet itself. See the reference for some examples. Another is simply the 'universal solvent'. By definition, the universal solvent dissolves everything. Let's say you have a container of it in your lab. It dissolves the container and spills on the floor. It dissolves the floor and spills on the earth. It dissolves the earth.
