I think they offer different phones in different areas depending on coverage.

You must do your homework and ask every phone provider in your town.
Yes, the ones that take SIM cards are better. You will be able to change providers when you travel and it will be more useful for you in the long run. Make sure the phone is not "locked". That makes it useless.

If you mean SIM cards then the answer is 'no'. However, if you mean for camera or MP3 storage, then 'yes'....

no if you mean sim cards but nextel phones do have sim cards
